Jitter buffer is a hardware cum software process that eliminates jitters caused by transmission delays in an Internet telephony (VoIP) network. It is also known as Jitter Filter. There are two types of Jitter Buffer, one is static and the other is dynamic. Dynamic jitter buffer is a software-based Jitter Buffer that can be configured by a system or network administrator. This technology is widely used in the call center outsourcing industry.
Voice frames transmit at a fixed rate. The voice quality is perceived good if the frame arrives at the other end at the same rate. In most cases, some frames arrive slightly faster or slower than the other frames. This delay variation, known as jitter, degrades the perceived voice quality. To minimize the effect of this problem, service providers make use of dynamic jitter buffer device. The jitter buffer carefully collects voice packets, stores and sends them to the voice processor in evenly spaced intervals. This technology also ensures that the received packets are kept in the correct order. Without a jitter buffer, data can be lost, resulting in irregular audio signals.DSL is different from dial up or analog software. DSL has high bandwidth to carry data and voice in different frequencies at the same time. You can receive phone calls and use the Internet at same time, whereas is dial up or analog is quite different. In analog, voice and data is transmitted in single frequency, so when you receive a phone call, the data connection gets disconnected. You can either use data or make a phone call with analog device, but while using DSL service, the customers can avail both at the same time.
