What is Intelligent Network Service?

Intelligent Network (IN) is a telephone network architecture, which was created by Bell Communications Research (Bellcore). In Intelligent Network, the service logic for a call is positioned independently from the switching facilities, which allows services to be added or altered without having to restructure switching equipment. IN is often termed as a service-specific architecture, which means a certain segment of a dialed phone number, such as 800 or 900, prompts a request for a definite service. IN has been evolving since its inception.  Its later version Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) introduced the notion of a service-independent architecture. It allowed a given portion of a telephone number to be deduced differently by diverse services based on factors like time of day, caller identity and type of call among other things. AIN made it easy to implement new services without having to mount new phone equipment.

The International telecommunication Union has three sectors and one of them is ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T). ITU-T manages standards and protocols for telecommunications. The Intelligent Network is the standard network architecture identified in the ITU-T Q.1200 series recommendations. The IN is proposed for both, fixed and mobile telecom networks. It permits operators to distinguish themselves by offering value-added services over and above the typical telecom services like Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) and Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) services on mobile phones.

In Intelligent Network, the network nodes on the service layer provide the intelligence as opposed to solutions centered on intelligence in the primary switches or telephone devices. The service layer is different from the switching layer of the core network. Typically, the IN nodules are held by telecommunication operators or service providers.
